Read the grammar explanation
These four endings all attach to the ます-stem (食べ, 行き, 飲み, し, 来). - 〜たいです: "I want to…", for your own wishes: 日本へ行きたいです (I want to go to Japan). The object can take が instead of を: 水が飲みたいです. In casual speech drop です: 行きたい. - 〜ませんか: "Won't you…? / Would you like to…?", a polite invitation that lets the listener decide: うちに来ませんか (Would you like to come over?). - 〜ましょう: "Let's…", to accept an invitation or get a group moving: さあ、始めましょう! (Well, let's begin!). - 〜ましょうか: "Shall I…?", to offer help: 私が持ちましょうか (Shall I carry it?). It can also soften a suggestion ("Shall we…?"). Clues: 私が with a question is an offer (ましょうか); inviting the listener (私と一緒に, うちに来る) is ませんか; a firm "Let's…!" is ましょう; が before the verb means たい.

Questions

How should I start learning Japanese?

Start with a small topic you can use straight away. Try “People: 人” in “Counters”, then study “Wants and Invitations: 〜たい, 〜ましょう, 〜ませんか” to see how words fit into sentences. Recall the examples before revealing their meanings and return to the words you find difficult.

Every day LENGO picks new words for you and lines them up with the ones due for review. Tap Start and practice what matters right now.

Is LENGO free?

Yes. Dozens of packs in every language, all alphabet lessons, every practice mode and your own lists are free, with no ads. LENGO Pro unlocks every pack and the AI Assistant, for one language or for all of them, monthly, yearly or once for life.

Subscriptions renew until you cancel them, and you can cancel any time. Without Pro, you can also unlock single packs with coins.

How does LENGO decide what I practice?

Every word has a strength. New words come first, then the words that are due: a weak word comes back after 10 minutes, a strong one after three days to a week. A right answer makes the wait longer, a wrong one brings the word back sooner.

Recognizing a word, hearing it, saying it and writing it are different skills. Switch on the modes you like, and every answer counts toward the same word.

Spaced repetition
How many new words do I learn a day?

Seven to start with. You can set anything from 3 to 20 new words a day.

Learning a language is a habit. LENGO keeps it light: a streak to protect, a nudge when you need one and goals you set yourself.

Return to the Words screen for your next session. Keep the daily new-word target manageable and use a different practice mode to challenge your recall.

Spaced repetition
Can I add my own words?

Yes. Make your own lists and LENGO suggests the translations, import a CSV file, scan a printed list with your iPhone, or let the AI Assistant write a list for any topic.

Type in any word and LENGO suggests the translation. Free, and no account needed.

Use one pair per row: your familiar language in the first column, the language you are learning in the second. This sample uses semicolons and no header row. Check the translations before importing your own additions.

Create your own vocabulary pack
Can I learn Japanese grammar offline on iPhone or iPad?

Yes. LENGO’s Japanese app includes built-in vocabulary and grammar packs for offline practice on iPhone and iPad. Install the app before travelling and test your chosen lessons in airplane mode. Community content, some pictures and some voices still need an internet connection.

Before travelling, open the lesson you want and try your chosen exercises in airplane mode. Check the audio on your own device too.

Offline learning
Do my words sync between devices?

Yes, once you sign in with a free LENGO account, by email or with Sign in with Apple. You can also use LENGO without an account.

Send a list to friends with a link, or publish it for other learners. Sharing needs a free account.

Does LENGO send notifications?

LENGO can remind you when your streak is at risk, and Push Learning sends quick exercises you answer right in the notification. You choose which notifications you get in your device's settings.

A day counts as soon as you get one answer right. Miss a day and your streak freezes instead of breaking. Only two missed days in a row start it over.

Who writes the lessons?

Professional language teachers write the vocabulary and grammar. If you spot a mistake, long-press the word to report it. Our team checks every report.

Every language comes with vocabulary and grammar packs written by language teachers, with audio for every word and dozens of packs for free.

What do I need?

An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17 or later, a Mac with macOS 14 or later, Apple Vision Pro, or an Android phone with Google Play.

Also with Siri and Shortcuts, Spotlight search, dark mode and keyboard shortcuts on the Mac.

Every screen
Can I learn with VoiceOver and other accessibility features?

On iPhone or iPad, turn on VoiceOver in Accessibility settings. In a multiple-choice exercise, swipe right to hear each answer, then double-tap to choose one. VoiceOver tells you whether you answered correctly.

LENGO also supports Voice Control, larger text, Dark Mode, increased contrast and reduced motion. You can tell which answers are correct without relying on color.
