Which Counter? 本, 枚, 冊, 匹, 台 or 個

In Japanese a number needs a counter, and you choose the counter by the shape or type of the thing you count.

  • 本 (ほん): long, thin things: pens, pencils, bottles, umbrellas, trees
  • 枚 (まい): flat things: tickets, stamps, plates, photos, towels
  • 冊 (さつ): books, notebooks, magazines, manga
  • 匹 (ひき): small animals, fish and insects
  • 台 (だい): machines and vehicles: cars, bicycles, TVs, computers
  • 個 (こ): small, compact objects: eggs, apples, sweets; from one to nine つ works too (卵を六つ)

The usual order is noun + particle + number + counter: 本を三冊 (three books). The noun 本 (book) still takes 冊! To ask how many, use 何: 何枚, 何台. Some counters change their sound: 三本 さんぼん, 六本 ろっぽん, 三匹 さんびき, 一匹 いっぴき, 何本 なんぼん. 何個 has no つ form (ask いくつ instead).
