Japanese · Noun-Modifying Clauses: 昨日買った本
Particles Inside the Clause: が/の, を, で or に
A clause in front of a noun keeps its own particles. Find where the clause starts and ends, then choose the particle that the verb inside it needs:
- を for the object: コーヒーを飲む店 (the shop where I drink coffee)
- で for the place of an action: 駅で会った人 (the person I met at the station)
- に for a destination, a recipient (also へ) or where someone lives: 電車に乗る人, 東京に住んでいた
- が for the subject of the clause: 私が生まれた町 (the town where I was born)
Only the subject may switch to の: 私の生まれた町 is just as correct. The topic marker は normally stays out of such a clause, because it marks the topic of the whole sentence. Watch the verbs that differ from English: 乗る and 住む take に, not を or で.
