Grammar

Wants and Invitations: 〜たい, 〜ましょう, 〜ませんか

These four endings all attach to the ます-stem (食べ, 行き, 飲み, し, 来). - 〜たいです: "I want to…", for your own wishes: 日本へ行きたいです (I want to go to Japan). The object can take が instead of を: 水が飲みたいです. In casual speech drop です: 行きたい. - 〜ませんか: "Won't you…? / Would you like to…?", a polite invitation that lets the listener decide: うちに来ませんか (Would you like to come over?). - 〜ましょう: "Let's…", to accept an invitation or get a group moving: さあ、始めましょう! (Well, let's begin!). - 〜ましょうか: "Shall I…?", to offer help: 私が持ちましょうか (Shall I carry it?). It can also soften a suggestion ("Shall we…?"). Clues: 私が with a question is an offer (ましょうか); inviting the listener (私と一緒に, うちに来る) is ませんか; a firm "Let's…!" is ましょう; が before the verb means たい.
