Using the て-form: Requests, Permission, Rules
Once you can build the て-form, many everyday patterns are just an ending away. The verb is given up to its て-form stem (撮っ, 磨い, 話し, 食べ); add the whole pattern, starting with て:
- てください: a polite request. 窓を閉めてください (Please close the window.)
- てもいいですか: asking for permission; these sentences end in a question mark. 座ってもいいですか (May I sit down?)
- てはいけません: something is not allowed. In speech it often shrinks to ちゃいけません.
- ています: an action in progress right now. 今、雪が降っています (It is snowing now.)
- てから: after doing A, then B. 電話してから行きます (I will call first and then go.)
Use the clues in the sentence: 今 (now) points to ています, a rule or prohibition points to てはいけません, and a question asking whether you may do something points to てもいいですか.

- ここに座ってもいいですか？
- 教室で食べ物を食べてはいけません。
- 姉は今、音楽を聞いています。
- 仕事が終わってから、ジムへ行きます。
