Mixed Review: Which Polite Form?

Polite Japanese verbs keep the same ます-stem and change only the ending. The stem of 行く is 行き, of 食べる 食べ, of 飲む 飲み, of する し and of 来る 来 (き).

  • 〜ます: present, future or habit: 毎日会社へ行きます (I go to the office every day).
  • 〜ました: past: 昨日行きました (I went yesterday).
  • 〜ません: negative present or future: 明日は行きません (I won't go tomorrow).
  • 〜ませんでした: negative past: 昨日は行きませんでした (I didn't go yesterday).

Japanese has no separate future tense, so 明日 still takes 〜ます or 〜ません. Read the whole sentence for the cue: 毎日, 明日 or 今日 point to the present forms, 昨日 or 先週 to the past, and a reason such as 休みですから or 病気でしたから tells you the action did not happen.

Examples

  • 明日、友達が家に来ます。
  • 先週、京都へ行きました。
  • 私は肉を食べません。
  • 昨日はテレビを見ませんでした。
