より, だけ, しか or ぐらい

  • より means "than": 新幹線はバスより速いです (The Shinkansen is faster than the bus). With のほうが, the thing you prefer comes second: コーヒーより紅茶のほうが好きです (I like tea more than coffee).
  • だけ means "only, just" and is usually used with a positive verb: 一つだけあります (There is just one).
  • しか also means "only", but the verb must be negative: 百円しかありません (I only have 100 yen). Negative verb: choose しか. Positive verb: choose だけ.
  • ぐらい or くらい means "about, roughly" after an amount or a length of time: 十分ぐらい (about ten minutes). A word like 大体 (roughly) is a strong hint. ほど can be used the same way in slightly more formal speech.
