Japanese · Keigo: Honorific and Humble Verbs
Humble Verbs (謙譲語)
Kenjōgo (謙譲語, humble language) lowers you or your own group (your family, your company), which raises the listener. Use it only when you or your side do the action, never when a superior does it. The special humble verbs:
- 申す = 言う (私は田中と申します)
- 参る = 行く, 来る; 伺う = to visit someone, and also 聞く
- いただく = 食べる, 飲む, もらう
- 拝見する = 見る
- いたす = する
- 存じる = 知る; 存じ上げる is only for knowing a person
- おる = いる, also after a て-form (住んでおります)
- 差し上げる = あげる; お目にかかる = 会う
Answers are in the polite ます style. Compare the direction of giving: 先生が本をくださいました (the teacher gave me a book) and 先生に本をいただきました (I received a book from the teacher).
