Talking to Ön: Formal Address & tetszik
Hungarian has a polite 'you': Ön for one person and Önök for several. They take 3rd-person verbs, just like ő and ők:
- Ön hol lakik? (Where do you live?) Önök mit kérnek? (What would you like?)
- With a definite object the verb is definite too: Kéri a számlát? (Would you like the bill?)
- Ön/Önök is often left out; the address term shows the politeness: Kovács úr, doktor úr, tanár úr, uram.
Toward older people, especially when you call them néni or bácsi, Hungarians use tetszik + infinitive instead: Kati néni, mit tetszik kérni? (Aunt Kati, what would you like?) For two or more people it is tetszenek: Hova tetszenek menni? (Where are you going?)
