Panie Tomku, pani Aniu: addressing people
To call or greet someone, Polish uses the vocative. In polite address:
- pan becomes panie, and a first name or title follows in the vocative: panie Tomku, panie Adamie, panie profesorze, panie kierowniku
- pani stays the same, but a first name changes: pani Aniu, pani Magdo, pani Ewo
- female titles never change: pani doktor, pani profesor, pani dyrektor
Pan or pani with a first name is friendly yet still formal, typical among colleagues and neighbours.
Letters open with capitals: Szanowny Panie, Szanowna Pani, Szanowni Państwo.
Calling out a bare Panie! or Pani! sounds rude; say proszę pana or proszę pani instead.
