Grammar

Yes and No Answers: có, phải, rồi, chưa

Vietnamese has no all-purpose 'yes'. The short answer repeats the key word of the question. - có … không? → Có (yes) or Không (no), or repeat the verb: Anh có thích phở không? Có / Thích. - …, phải không? and Có phải … không? → Phải (yes) or Không phải (no). - (đã) … chưa? (… yet?) → Rồi (yes, already) or Chưa (not yet). Vâng and Dạ are polite yes-words that fit most questions, and Dạ also softens a no: Dạ chưa, Dạ không. The echo word shows that you understood the question: Phải does not answer a có … không? question, and Có alone does not answer a chưa? question. A full sentence usually follows the short answer: Chưa, tôi chưa ăn. (Not yet, I haven't eaten.)
