Grammar lessons
Study “Polite Requests”: read the rule, then use it to complete three sentences from the lesson.
Who writes the lessons?
Professional language teachers write the vocabulary and grammar. If you spot a mistake, long-press the word to report it. Our team checks every report.
Each lesson explains the rule with examples, then you practice it in sentences.
Polite Requests
A few small words turn a bare Thai sentence into a polite request:
- ขอ + thing or action: you ask for something for yourself, or ask permission. ขอน้ำเปล่าค่ะ (Water, please.)
- ช่วย + action: you ask someone else to do something. ช่วยพูดช้า ๆ ได้ไหมครับ (Could you speak slowly?) รบกวน ('sorry to trouble you') is even more polite.
- เชิญ invites the listener to do something: เชิญนั่งค่ะ (Please sit down.)
- โปรด and กรุณา are the formal 'please' used on signs and in announcements.
- หน่อย ('a little') softens a request: รอหน่อยนะคะ (Wait a moment, please.)
- ด้วย at the end adds 'too' or 'please', and ช่วยด้วย means 'Help!'
End your request with ครับ if you are a man, or with ค่ะ (คะ in a question or after นะ) if you are a woman.
