Qué or Cuál?
Both qué and cuál can mean what, but they are not interchangeable.
Use qué:
- to ask for a definition: ¿Qué es un tamal? (What is a tamale?)
- directly before a noun: ¿Qué idiomas hablas? (What languages do you speak?)
- with most verbs other than ser: ¿Qué quieres? (What do you want?)
Use cuál (singular) or cuáles (plural):
- before es / son + a noun, to identify one specific thing: ¿Cuál es tu dirección? (What is your address?)
- before de, to choose from a group: ¿Cuál de estos prefieres? (Which of these do you prefer?)
Tip: ¿Qué es...? asks what something is; ¿Cuál es...? asks which one it is. Use cuáles when the answer is plural.
