Spanish · Questions & Negation

Qué or Cuál?

Both qué and cuál can mean what, but they are not interchangeable.

Use qué:

  • to ask for a definition: ¿Qué es un tamal? (What is a tamale?)
  • directly before a noun: ¿Qué idiomas hablas? (What languages do you speak?)
  • with most verbs other than ser: ¿Qué quieres? (What do you want?)

Use cuál (singular) or cuáles (plural):

  • before es / son + a noun, to identify one specific thing: ¿Cuál es tu dirección? (What is your address?)
  • before de, to choose from a group: ¿Cuál de estos prefieres? (Which of these do you prefer?)

Tip: ¿Qué es...? asks what something is; ¿Cuál es...? asks which one it is. Use cuáles when the answer is plural.

Examples

  • ¿Qué es la sangría?
  • ¿Qué libro estás leyendo?
  • ¿Cuál es tu nombre completo?
  • ¿Cuáles son tus colores favoritos?
  • ¿Cuál de las dos camisas te gusta más?
