Question Words
A Spanish question opens with an upside-down ¿ and closes with ?. Question words always carry a written accent:
- qué (what), quién (who), dónde (where), cómo (how), cuándo (when), por qué (why)
- cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, cuántas (how much, how many) agree with the noun that follows: ¿Cuánta leche?, ¿Cuántos hermanos?
- cuál (which, what) picks one thing from a set: ¿Cuál de estas es tuya?
- de dónde (where from) and adónde or a dónde (where to) go with verbs of movement such as ir and venir.
The question word por qué is two words; the answer porque (because) is one word. The subject usually comes after the verb: ¿Dónde trabaja tu padre? (Where does your father work?)
Examples
- ¿Qué haces esta tarde?
