Traveling alone doesn’t have to feel lonely! Here’s 3 ways to make friends while traveling!
December 30, 2022
Josie

I’d like to start this post by saying ‘I am proud of you’. Seriously! A solo trip may be one of the most nerve-wracking things you’ve ever done. (It was for me at least.) But I guarantee you won’t regret it!

Of course, If you’re reading this post, I’m sure I don't have to sell you on all the reasons why solo travel can be a life-changing experience. So instead, let’s talk about how you can avoid feeling lonely and meet some new awesome friends along the way!

# 1 - Start learning the local language

Sharing a language is what brings millions of people together, but it can also be a major barrier when you’re trying to meet new people in a country other than your own. To combat that, try to start learning the language of the locals.

Even though you may not be fluent yet, just a few words and phrases will go a long way! If you’re a foreigner a lot of times people won’t expect you to speak the language. Which makes the fact that you do, even more interesting and opens up opportunities to make good conversation and hopefully a new friend.

My favorite thing to do is ask for directions! Of course, you don't want to make it obvious that you have no idea where you’re going for safety reasons. But asking for directions in particular is a great way to get a conversation started!

# 2 - Sign up for group tours and experiences

Signing up for things like group experiences can be the perfect way to make friends and learn more about the culture of your destination. It could also be the perfect time to explore hobbies you never had time for back home.

Just a quick search on Airbnb Experiences will give you hundreds of results such as a sailing experience on the coast of Spain or even a volcano hike in Iceland.

No matter what you choose, just be sure to read the reviews first and be prepared to have a great time!

# 3 - Opt for a hostel over a hotel

When you stay at a hostel it’s almost impossible NOT to meet new people! This is why it’s by far one of the best ways to avoid feeling lonely during those solo trips.

Not only will it save you money compared to traditional hotels, but it will also give you access to all of the fun events that happen there.

Since hostels cater specifically to solo travelers, most like to host events for lodgers to have fun and meet people from all over the world! And A LOT (if not all) of them are just as passionate about travel and languages as you are.

And even if they aren’t hosting anything during your stay, you will have plenty of people to talk to between your room and the public areas. But please remember to be safe and keep an eye out at all times.

Happy travels!
