If only: gdyby and żeby
For unreal or imagined situations Polish uses gdyby + the past form in the if-clause and the conditional in the main clause: Gdybym miał czas, pojechałbym w góry. (If I had time, I would go to the mountains.)
The person ending sits on gdyby (gdybym, gdybyś, gdyby, gdybyśmy, gdybyście), so the verb after it looks like the plain past: miał, była, przyszli. In the main clause by may also stand before the verb: chłopcy graliby or chłopcy by grali, częściej byśmy się spotykały.
Żeby works the same way after verbs of wanting and asking when the subjects differ: Chcę, żebyś przyszedł. (I want you to come.) With the same subject use the infinitive: Chcę przyjść.
Match gender and number: miał/miała, mieli (men or mixed groups), miały (women, children).
Examples
- Gdybym wiedział, przyszedłbym wcześniej.
- Gdyby było cieplej, poszlibyśmy nad jezioro.
- Chcę, żebyś mi pomógł.
- Powiedz jej, żeby zadzwoniła.
