3. Dative case with nouns
Polish Dative grammatical case (Celownik) is not used as often. It answers the questions: komu? (to who?) and czemu? (to what?). First question refers to people, second refers to animals and objects. Polish speakers use Dative case when talking about indirect objects.
It is used in these situations:
1. When talking about the recipient
Example: Kupuję mamie kwiaty. ( I am buying flowers to my mum.)
Otwórz drzwi psu. (Open the door to a dog.)
2. When expressing impersonal phrases
Example: Gorąco ci? – (Are you hot?)
3. After the „przeciwko” (‘against sth’), „wbrew” (‘in spite of’), „dzięki” (‘thanks to’), prepositions
Example: Walczymy przeciwko podatkom. – (‘We are fighting against the taxes.’)
Dzięki mamie mam co jeść. – (‘Thanks to mum I have something to eat.’)
Postąpił wbrew zasadom. – (‘He acted against the rules.’)
4. After the verbs: przebaczyć (‘to forgive’), pomagać (‘to help’), przeszkadzać (‘to disturb’), wierzyć (‘to believe’), zazdrościć (‘to envy’), pożyczyć (‘to lend’/ ‘to borrow’), dawać (‘to give’), podobać się (‘to like’), pasować (‘to fit’), opowiadać (‘to tell’), dziękować (‘to thank’), gratulować (‘to congratulate’), odmawiać (‘to refuse’), pozwolić (‘to let’), smakować (‘to taste good’), imponować (‘to impress’) + after adjective „wierny” (‘faithful’)
Examples: Wierzę mojej dziewczynie. (‘I believe my girlfriend.’)
My dajemy prezenty dzieciom. (‘We are giving gifts to children.’)
Oni są wierni Bogu. (‘They are faithful to God.’)
