The thing I…: -dik & -ecek

When the noun is not the doer (the book I read), add -dik plus a possessive ending to the verb and put it before the noun: okuduğum kitap (the book I read).

  • Persons: okuduğum, okuduğun, okuduğu, okuduğumuz, okuduğunuz, okudukları.
  • The vowel follows harmony (-dığ, -diğ, -duğ, -düğ). After p, ç, t, k, s, ş, h, f the d becomes t: yaptığım, gittiğim.
  • The k softens to ğ before a vowel: okuduk → okuduğum.
  • -dik covers past and present: oturduğun ev (the house you live in).

For the future use -ecek plus possessive: okuyacağım kitap (the book I will read), gideceğimiz yer, yiyeceğimiz tatlı. A named possessor takes the genitive: Annemin yaptığı yemek (the food my mother made).
