Yes/No questions in Thai are questions that require an answer of a positive or negative form, yes or no, to affirm the question or deny the question similar to English.
We use ไหม, หรือ or เหรอ, หรือไม่, หรือเปล่า or รึเปล่า to form this kind of question, and most of the time, the ไหม question is being used to ask yes/no questions in the Thai language. In Thai, it is not necessary to put a question mark at the end of every question.
General Structure:
Sentence/statement/verb/adjective + ไหม, หรือ or เหรอ, หรือไม่, หรือเปล่า or รึเปล่า, รึยัง
For example;
Do you like Thai food? >> คุณชอบอาหารไทยไหม?
Are you having lunch? >> คุณ(กำลัง)กินข้าวกลางวันอยู่หรือ?
Can you come with me?>> คุณมากับผมได้หรือไม่?
Will you go to the market?>> คุณจะไปตลาดหรือเปล่า?
Have you brushed your teeth yet?>> คุณแปรงฟันรึยัง?
In general, to answer these questions, if the answer is
Yes: repeat the verb or adjective from the question
No: ไม่ + the verb or adjective from the question
No: เปล่า (This word can be the answer for the question with หรือเปล่า or รึเปล่า apart from ไม่)
However, as for the question ending with รึยัง (Have… yet?), we always repeat the verb or adjective from the question + แล้ว (already) for Yes, or ยัง for No which means Not yet.
Notes:
1) If the question includes more than one verb, we normally use the first verb in responses and if there is an adverb in the question, we also do repeat the adverb.
2) As for the question with the word ใช่ (literally means 'yes') placed in front of those yes/no question words (the meaning of the question is the same as asking >> …, isn't it?..., correct?), the answer is either ใช่ for Yes or ไม่ใช่ for No.
3) As for the question with the word ได้ (literally means 'can') placed in front of those yes/no question words (the meaning of the question is the same as asking >> (Can...?), the answer is either ได้ for Yes or ไม่ได้ for No.

ปฏิเสธ: ไม่ไป

ตอบรับ: อิ่ม
