Reading Tricky Words

Some Thai words are not read as spelled; dictionaries give the hyphenated reading after อ่านว่า.

  • Hidden vowel: two consonants with no vowel between them get a short -ะ after the first (สบาย = สะ-บาย), sometimes -ออ (บริษัท = บอ-ริ-สัด). After a mid- or high-class first letter, a following ง น ม ย ร ล ว usually reads as if led by a silent ห (ขนม = ขะ-หนม); after a low-class one it does not (พยาบาล = พะ-ยา-บาน).
  • Silent ร: in จร สร ศร the ร is not read (จริง = จิง, สร้าง = ส้าง).
  • ทร = ซ: ทราบ = ซาบ.
  • ์ silences the letter it sits on, sometimes with the one before (จันทร์ = จัน).
  • Linking: a final consonant also starts the next syllable with -ะ (ผลไม้ = ผน-ละ-ไม้).
  • Silent last vowel: a final ิ or ุ may go unread (ประวัติ = ประ-หวัด).
