Thai · Reading Rules: Tones & Spelling
Name the Tone
Thai spelling tells you the tone of every syllable. Check three things: the class of the first consonant, whether the syllable is live (a long vowel, ไ ใ ำ เ-า, or a final ng, n, m, y, w sound) or dead (another short vowel, or a final k, t, p sound), and the tone mark.
- Mid class (ก จ ด ต บ ป อ): live = เสียงสามัญ, dead = เสียงเอก; with ่ เอก, ้ โท, ๊ ตรี, ๋ จัตวา.
- High class (ข ฉ ถ ผ ฝ ส ห …): live = เสียงจัตวา, dead = เสียงเอก; with ่ เอก, ้ โท.
- Low class (all the others): live = เสียงสามัญ, dead short = เสียงตรี, dead long = เสียงโท; with ่ โท, ้ ตรี.
A silent ห in front of ง ญ น ม ย ร ล ว makes that letter high class (หมา is rising), and อ in front of ย makes it mid class (อยู่ is low).
