Imperativo Negativo
The Spanish imperative has precisely the same use as the English imperative. We use it to give orders, instructions, or advice. That's why we call this form command form.
Since the negative command form of Spanish requires knowledge of the subjunctive, we recommended to learn this form first!
The special thing about the Spanish imperative is the conjugation of the verbs. The conjugation distinguishes between the positive and negative imperative. However, this chapter focuses on the negative imperative, the Imperativo Negativo.
We form the negative command form in the singular tú by using the Subjuntivo De Présente of the 2nd person singular.
The verb Hablar thus becomes ¡No Hables!
When speaking in the plural, we also use the Subjuntivo De Présente, in the 2nd person plural form.
The verb Hablar thus becomes ¡No Habléis!
However, if you want to be polite with a person, we use the form Usted. We use the Subjuntivo De Presénte in the imperative, i.e., the same as in the positive form, only with the negation in front of it.
The verb Hablar becomes ¡No Hable!
When we speak in the plural and want to be polite, we use the form Ustedes—the same as in the positive form, only with the negation in front of it.
The verb Hablar becomes ¡No Hablen!
