Word Order
The word order in the Slovak language is very flexible, allowing many sentence variants.
Because of that, the Czech language highly relies on intonation. A different intonation can give a slightly different meaning to the same sentence.
By changing the word order, we can emphasize some expressions.
Despite the great flexibility, the basic word order is: subject - predicate - other constituents of the sentence
Subject (Podmet) = who or what performs the action
Predicate (verb) (Prísudok) = gives information about the subject
Other constituents of the sentence (object) (Ostatné vetné členy - e.g.predmet) = is affected by the action of a verb
Janka (subject) ide (predicate - verb) do kina (other constituents of the sentence - object). - Jane is going to the cinema.
Today Jane is going to the cinema with her sister:
Janka ide so svojou sestrou dnes do kina.
subject - predicate - other parts of the sentence
other possibilities:
- Dnes so svojou sestrou ide Janka do kina.
- Janka ide do kina so svojou sestrou.
- Do kina ide Janka so svojou sestrou.
The sentence's meaning is the same, and there are emphasized different parts of the sentence.
