Clitic Order: som, sa, mi, ho

Slovak has short unstressed words, called clitics, that can never begin a sentence. They follow the first stressed word, usually the verb, and always keep the same order:

  • by (would)
  • som, si, sme, ste (past-tense helpers)
  • sa, si (reflexive)
  • mi, ti, mu (to me, to you, to him)
  • ma, ťa, ho (me, you, him or it)

So you say Učil som sa. (I was studying.), Chcel by som. (I would like to.) and Dal som mu ho. (I gave it to him.). When the verb is the only full word, it comes first: Páči sa mi. (I like it.), not Mi sa páči, and Učil som sa., not Som sa učil.

Examples

  • Učil som sa celý večer.
  • Páči sa mi tvoja nová bunda.
  • Chcel by som šálku kávy.
  • Požičal som mu ho včera.
  • Bojíš sa ho?
