Tu, Você & O Senhor

Portugal has three everyday ways to say you, and each takes its own verb form:

  • tu + 2nd person singular (tu falas, queres, podes) for friends, family, children and people your age.
  • o senhor / a senhora + 3rd person singular (o senhor fala, quer, pode) for strangers, older people, customers and anyone you treat formally. A name or title works too (a Dona Maria, o professor), or leave the subject out: Pode repetir?
  • vocês + 3rd person plural (vocês falam, querem) is the plural you for everyone; os senhores is the very polite plural.

Você also takes the 3rd person (você quer), but in Portugal it can sound blunt, so people prefer a name, a title or no pronoun. Vós is no longer used in everyday speech.

Examples
