Lhe or O? Indirect Objects

Verbs that link to a person with a (give to, say to, write to) use the indirect pronouns lhe (to him, to her, to you) and lhes (to them). lhe does not change for gender.

  • lhe, lhes: dar, dizer, escrever, telefonar, perguntar, responder, mandar, emprestar, oferecer. Telefonei-lhe. (I phoned her.) Ofereci-lhe um livro. (I gave him a book.)
  • o, a, os, as: ajudar, convidar, ver, conhecer, visitar, ouvir. Ajudei-a. (I helped her.) Convidei-os. (I invited them.)

In European Portuguese ajudar and convidar take a direct object, so say ajudo-o, not ajudo-lhe. A handy test: if the verb already has a thing as its object (um livro, a verdade), the person is lhe.
