O, A, Os, As: Direct Objects

To avoid repeating a person or thing that was just mentioned, use a direct-object pronoun. Choose it by the gender and number of the noun it replaces:

  • o: masculine singular. O Pedro? Conheço-o. (Pedro? I know him.)
  • a: feminine singular. A sopa? Faço-a. (The soup? I make it.)
  • os: masculine or mixed plural. Os bilhetes? Comprei-os. (I bought them.)
  • as: feminine plural. As chaves? Perdi-as. (I lost them.)

The same pronoun covers people and things: o means both him and it. In an ordinary European Portuguese statement the pronoun goes after the verb, joined by a hyphen. Look at the noun named first to pick the right form.

Examples

  • O Pedro? Conheço-o da escola.
  • A sopa? Faço-a todas as semanas.
  • Os bilhetes? Comprei-os ontem.
  • As chaves? Encontrei-as no carro.
