Agreement: nowy, nowa, nowe

Polish adjectives agree with the gender of their noun. The dictionary form is the masculine nominative in -y (nowy, mały) or -i after k, g and soft consonants (polski, drogi, tani). Feminine nouns take -a and neuter nouns take -e, written -ie after k and g:

  • masculine: nowy dom, polski ser
  • feminine: nowa książka, tania torba
  • neuter: nowe biuro, polskie piwo

The ending is the same before the noun (duże mieszkanie) and after jest (mieszkanie jest duże). Check the noun, not only its last letter: mężczyzna is masculine, nouns in -um and loanwords like kakao are neuter (muzeum, centrum), and some feminine nouns end in a consonant (noc, jesień, wieś).
