Finnish · Local Cases
On and At: -lla, -lta and -lle
The second group of place endings means on, at and onto:
- -lla/-llä: on, at (Missä?): pöydällä (on the table), asemalla (at the station)
- -lta/-ltä: off, from (Mistä?): pöydältä (off the table)
- -lle: onto, to (Mihin?): pöydälle (onto the table)
Use them for surfaces (table, floor, wall, shelf), open places (square, beach, yard, field, street) and a few set places such as mökillä (at the cottage) and lentokentällä (at the airport). Words with front vowels take -llä/-ltä.
The -lla ending also means by with vehicles: bussilla (by bus), junalla (by train), pyörällä (by bike).
All three endings use the weak stem: pöytä → pöydällä, ranta → rannalla, katu → kadulla, kenttä → kentällä.
Examples

- Laita kirja hyllylle.
- Tulimme rannalta kotiin.
- Menen töihin bussilla.
