Modal Verbs

The Modal verbs express desire, ability, necessity, obligation, and permission.
They are followed by the infinitive of another verb.
Many modal verbs have irregular conjugations that must be memorized.

Czech model verbs are:

1) Desire: CHTÍT (to want)
1. person: já chci - my chceme
2. person: ty chceš - vy chcete
3. person: on/ona, ono chce - oni/ony chtějí

past tense: chtěl, chtěla, chtělo, chtěli, chtěly, chtěla
opposite: nechtít

"chtít" is often used in the conditional mood to show politeness or hypotheticality of desire - it is often translated as "would like to".

for masculine
1. person: chtěl by - chtěli bychom
2. person: chtěl bys - chtěli byste
3. person: chtěl by - chtěli byste

for feminine: chtěla (singular) - chtěly (plural) + by
for neuter: chtělo (singular) - chtěla (plural) + by
