Yes/no questions with ли

Bulgarian turns a statement into a yes/no question with the particle ли. It never starts the sentence: it comes right after the word you are asking about.

  • Usually that word is the verb: Говориш ли английски? (Do you speak English?)
  • With съм, ли follows the adjective or adverb and comes before the form of съм: Гладен ли си? (Are you hungry?)
  • In the future, ли follows the whole ще group: Ще ми помогнеш ли? (Will you help me?)
  • In the perfect, ли follows the participle: Бил ли си там? (Have you been there?)
  • Put another word first to make it the focus: Кафе ли обичаш? (Is it coffee you like?)

Short pronouns such as ме, ти, се stay before the verb after ще, but follow ли when the verb comes first: Разбираш ли ме? (Do you understand me?)

Examples

  • Уморена ли си?
  • Ще ми се обадиш ли?
  • Гледал ли си този филм?
  • Днес ли заминаваш?
