Мне нравится, мне нужно, мне холодно
Russian often puts the person who likes, needs or feels something in the dative case instead of making it the subject. The dative pronouns are мне, тебе, ему, ей, нам, вам, им (nouns too: маме, брату).
- нравиться: the thing you like is the subject, so the verb agrees with it: Мне нравится песня, Мне нравятся цветы. Past: нравился, нравилась, нравилось, нравились.
- нужно, надо, можно, нельзя, пора + infinitive: Ему нужно купить хлеб (He needs to buy bread).
- нужен, нужна, нужно, нужны agree with the thing needed: Мне нужен телефон (I need a phone).
- Feelings and states: Мне холодно (I'm cold), Нам было весело (We had fun).
- Age: Ему 25 лет (He is 25).
