Language Words: čeština, česky, český
Czech uses three different words for a language, and each has its own job:
- čeština is the noun, the name of the language. It changes like žena: Čeština je krásná. (Czech is beautiful.), v češtině (in Czech), do češtiny (into Czech), Mám rád češtinu. (I like Czech.)
- česky is the adverb in Czech, used after mluvit, psát and říct: Mluvíte česky? (Do you speak Czech?) Never say mluvím češtinu.
- český is the adjective and agrees with its noun: český film, česká kuchyně, české pivo, čeští studenti.
After rozumět, umět and učit se both the adverb and the noun are correct: rozumím německy / němčině, umím španělsky / španělštinu, učím se česky / češtinu / češtině. Language words are written with a small letter.
