Possessive Pronouns

Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone.
The Vietnamese language doesn’t really have a direct equivalent of possessive pronouns such as My, Your, etc.

For possessive relationships, “của” can be placed before the pronoun and the kinship term:

My = của +tôi [the suitable word for ‘I’]
Your = của + bạn [the suitable word for ‘You’]

The above rule applies to all other cases: his, her, our, its, their, etc.

In the short version, sometimes people don’t use “của” but just use noun+ pronouns to show the possessive relationship:

Examples

  • Mẹ tôi
    Áo tôi

    Ông anh ấy
    Bố mẹ chúng tôi
