Turkish · Noun Phrases
Compound nouns: Türk kahvesi
When one noun simply names the kind of another (Türk kahvesi Turkish coffee, otobüs durağı bus stop), Turkish uses the indefinite noun compound: the first noun stays bare and the second noun takes -ı/-i/-u/-ü, or -sı/-si/-su/-sü after a vowel.
- kahve → Türk kahvesi, kurs → Türkçe kursu
- a final k, p or ç softens: durak → otobüs durağı, kitap → tarih kitabı, ağaç → elma ağacı
- su becomes suyu: portakal suyu (orange juice)
The ending is needed even though nothing is owned. Before a case ending, add -n-: hayvanat bahçesine (to the zoo), alışveriş merkezinde (in the shopping centre).
Compare: Ali'nin evi (Ali's house) has a real owner with -nin, while okul bahçesi (school yard) just names a type of yard.
