And then or without? -ip & -meden
-ip (-ıp, -up, -üp; after a vowel -yip) links two actions done by the same person: do this and (then) that. The first verb takes no tense or person ending; it shares them with the last verb: gidip aldım (I went and bought), alıp getirir misin? (will you get it and bring it?).
-madan / -meden means without doing: söylemeden gitti (he left without saying anything). It never changes for person. A formal synonym is -maksızın / -meksizin.
The same verbs take both forms, so the rest of the sentence decides: o yüzden çok açım (so I'm starving) means breakfast was skipped, yapmadan; şimdi aç değilim (now I'm not hungry) means it was eaten, yapıp. Negative words such as hiç, kimseye and hiçbir call for -madan.
Examples
- Eve gidip biraz dinlendim.
- Kitabı alıp bana verdi.
- Kimseye sormadan kararını verdi.
- Elini yıkamadan yemeğe oturma.
