Irregular Participles
Some very common verbs have an irregular participle. You use it after every form of haber, so learn it once and reuse it in all compound tenses: he hecho, habían visto, habría dicho.
- hacer → hecho, decir → dicho, ver → visto
- escribir → escrito, poner → puesto, abrir → abierto
- volver → vuelto, romper → roto, morir → muerto
- cubrir → cubierto, resolver → resuelto
Verbs built on these keep the irregularity: descubrir → descubierto, devolver → devuelto. Two common verbs have two correct participles: freír → frito or freído, and imprimir → impreso or imprimido.
As with regular verbs, the participle never changes after haber: Mis hijos todavía no han hecho la cama (My children haven't made their beds yet).
Examples
- ¿Has visto alguna vez la aurora boreal?
- Todavía no hemos hecho las maletas.
- Siempre me has dicho la verdad.
- Todavía no han abierto la nueva biblioteca.
