Pretérito Perfecto

The pretérito perfecto connects the past with the present. Form it with the present of haber plus the participle: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han + -ado for -ar verbs or -ido for -er/-ir verbs (hablar → he hablado, comer → has comido, vivir → han vivido, leer → he leído). The participle never changes, and nothing goes between haber and the participle.

Use it for:

  • experiences up to now with alguna vez, nunca, en mi vida: ¿Has estado en Japón? (Have you ever been to Japan?)
  • things not done yet with todavía no: Todavía no he terminado (I haven't finished yet)
  • situations that continue until now with siempre, últimamente

In Spain it is also used for events of today (hoy, esta mañana); in Latin America the indefinido is usual there: Hoy trabajé diez horas.

Examples

  • He visitado México dos veces.
  • ¿Alguna vez has probado el gazpacho?
  • Todavía no hemos comprado los regalos.
  • Siempre he querido aprender japonés.
  • Últimamente han subido mucho los precios.
