Romanian · Future
Spoken future: o să merg
In everyday speech Romanians rarely use the voi/vei/va future. Instead they say o să + the subjunctive form of the verb (the form that follows să):
- eu o să merg, tu o să mergi, el/ea o să meargă
- noi o să mergem, voi o să mergeți, ei o să meargă
The o never changes. Watch the third person, which takes the subjunctive ending: o să plouă, o să fie, o să aibă, o să vină, o să facă.
With eu you will also hear am să (am să sun), and with tu ai să (ai să vezi).
The negative puts nu in front: nu o să uit (often spoken n-o să uit).
The literary future (voi merge, va ploua) means exactly the same and is always accepted too. For planned events the plain present with a time word works as well: Mâine plecăm. (We're leaving tomorrow.) It is accepted where it sounds natural.
