Romanian · Present
Passive se: se vorbește, se vând
Romanian often uses se + a verb in the 3rd person where English uses the passive or "you" / "one". The thing is the subject, so the verb agrees with it:
- singular: Se vinde casă (House for sale), Aici se vorbește engleza (English is spoken here)
- plural: Se vând apartamente (Flats for sale), Se vorbesc patru limbi (Four languages are spoken)
With verbs that have no object, se is impersonal and the verb stays in the 3rd person singular: Aici nu se fumează (No smoking here), Cum se ajunge la gară? (How do you get to the station?)
This pattern is typical of signs, ads, recipes and instructions: Pâinea se coace în cuptor. Find the noun first, then choose the singular or the plural form.
