Dative pronouns: îmi, îți, îi, ne, le
Verbs like a plăcea (to please) work the other way round: the thing liked is the subject, and the person who likes it is in the dative. The short dative pronouns are îmi, îți, îi, ne, vă, le. Îmi place cafeaua. (I like coffee.) Îmi plac florile. (I like flowers.)
- A strong pronoun, or a dative noun before the verb, is doubled by the short form: Lui Mihai îi place. Copiilor le plac. Nouă ne place.
- States and feelings follow the same pattern: mi-e foame, frig, somn, dor, frică (I'm hungry, cold, sleepy, I miss, I'm afraid) and îmi pare rău (I'm sorry).
- In the perfect the forms shorten: mi-a, ți-a, i-a, ne-a, v-a, le-a plăcut.
- Verbs of giving and telling use the same pronouns: Îi dau cartea. (I give him the book.)
Examples
- Îmi place ciocolata.
- Lui Andrei îi plac trenurile.
- Mi-e sete, îmi dai un pahar cu apă?
- Ne pare rău pentru întârziere.
- Le-am spus copiilor o poveste.
