Vende-se & Foi Construída: Se and the Passive

Portuguese uses se when nobody in particular does the action, as on signs and in general statements.

  • In a plain statement se follows the verb with a hyphen: Fala-se inglês (English spoken), Vende-se casa (House for sale).
  • não, já, que and question words pull se before the verb: Aqui não se fuma. Como se diz isto?
  • The verb agrees with a plural noun: Alugam-se quartos. With a preposition it stays singular: Precisa-se de ajudantes.

The passive is ser + past participle, and the participle agrees like an adjective: a igreja foi construída, os bilhetes foram vendidos. The doer follows por (pelo, pela). Watch the irregular participles feito, escrito, aberto and preso.
