Mo, Lho & Dir-te-ei

Formal and written European Portuguese uses two special patterns.

Combined pronouns. When me, te, lhe or lhes meets o, a, os or as, the two merge into one word:

  • me + o → mo, me + a → ma
  • te + o → to, te + a → ta
  • lhe or lhes + o, a, os, as → lho, lha, lhos, lhas

Dá-mo. (Give it to me.) Já lho dei. (I already gave it to him.)

Pronoun inside the verb. In the future and the conditional the pronoun sits between the infinitive and the ending: dir-te-ei (I will tell you), ajudar-te-ia (I would help you), realizar-se-á (it will take place). Dizer and fazer shorten to dir- and far-. In speech people usually say the present (digo-te) or the imperfect (ajudava-te) instead.

Examples

  • Eu já lho disse ontem.
  • Amanhã dir-te-ei tudo.
  • No teu lugar, ajudá-lo-ia.
  • A cerimónia realizar-se-á no sábado.
