Would: ville/skulle + infinitive
To say what would happen, put hvis + the preterite in the if-clause and ville (or skulle) + infinitive in the main clause: Hvis jeg hadde tid, ville jeg lese mer. (If I had time, I would read more.) Wishes also take the preterite: Jeg skulle ønske at det var sommer. (I wish it were summer.)
For the unreal past, use hvis … hadde + participle and ville ha + participle: Hvis jeg hadde visst det, ville jeg ha kommet. (If I had known, I would have come.) Without hvis, start with Hadde: Hadde jeg visst det, …
Polite requests use the same forms: Ville du ha noe imot …?, Det hadde vært fint om …, Kunne du hjulpet meg?, Jeg skulle gjerne hatt …. In speech ha is often dropped, and kunne du hjelpe is just as correct.
