Korean · Counters & Number Forms
Which Counter?
To count something in Korean, say noun + number + counter: 사과 두 개 (two apples). The number is native Korean in its short form (한, 두, 세, 네, 스무), and the counter depends on what you count:
- 개: things in general (사과, 가방, 달걀)
- 명: people
- 마리: animals
- 권: books and notebooks
- 잔: cups and glasses of a drink
- 장: flat things such as paper, tickets and photos
- 대: vehicles and machines
- 벌: suits and sets of clothes
- 켤레: pairs of shoes or socks
- 송이: flowers
- 번: times (how often)
- 살: years of age
A particle can follow the counter or the noun: 책 두 권을 샀어요 and 책을 두 권 샀어요 both mean 'I bought two books'.
