Korean · Counters & Number Forms
Native or Sino-Korean?
Korean has two sets of numbers, and the unit decides which one you use.
- Native (하나, 둘, 셋…): hours (세 시), things and people (두 개, 네 명), age (다섯 살), times (세 번), cups (한 잔), and how long in hours or months (한 시간, 여섯 달)
- Sino-Korean (일, 이, 삼…): minutes and seconds (삼십 분, 삼십 초), floors (삼 층), lines and exits (이 호선, 삼 번 출구), servings (삼 인분), money (오만 원), dates and years (이십오 일, 이천 년), school years (사 학년)
A clock time mixes both: 두 시 삼십 분 (2:30). With a native number 번 counts times (세 번, three times); with a Sino-Korean number it is a label (삼 번 출구, exit 3). Watch out for 유월 (June) and 시월 (October), and 10,000 is 만 원, never 십천 원.
