Korean · Basic Sentences: 이다, 있다, 이/그/저
This & That: 이, 그, 저
Where English has only "this" and "that", Korean has three words:
- 이: close to me, the speaker. 이 책 (this book in my hand)
- 그: close to you, the listener, or something already mentioned that we can't see. 그 영화 (that movie we talked about)
- 저: over there, away from both of us but in sight. 저 산 (that mountain over there)
The same three-way split builds 이거 / 그거 / 저거 (this one, that one) and 여기 / 거기 / 저기 (here, there, over there). 이, 그 and 저 always come before a noun; 이거, 그거 and 저거 stand on their own. On the phone the other person's place is 거기: 거기 날씨는 어때요? (How's the weather there?)
