Korean · Basic Sentences: 이다, 있다, 이/그/저

Be or Have: 이다 or 있다

English uses "to be" for two different ideas, and Korean keeps them apart:

  • Identity (A is B): 이에요 / 예요, attached to the noun: 이 사람은 제 동생이에요 (This is my younger sibling).
  • Existence, location and possession (there is, is somewhere, have): 있어요, and its opposite 없어요: 화장실은 1층에 있어요 (The restroom is on the first floor), 돈이 없어요 (I have no money).

Tips: 있다 and 없다 are separate words written after a space, while 이에요/예요 stick to the noun. A place marked with 에 before the verb calls for 있어요 or 없어요. Words such as 하나도, 아무도, 전혀 and 별로 only appear in negative sentences, so they need 없어요.

Examples

  • 저는 회사원이에요.
  • 지금 집에 있어요.
  • 저는 형이 없어요.
  • 교실에 학생이 많이 있어요.
  • 이건 제 휴대폰이에요.
