Czech · Numbers, Dates & Time

1, 2-4, 5+: dvě hodiny, pět hodin

The form of a noun depends on the number in front of it:

  • 1: singular: jeden rok, jedna minuta (as an object: jednu minutu)
  • 2, 3, 4: nominative plural: dva roky, tři dny, čtyři koruny
  • 5 and more: genitive plural: pět let, deset minut, sto korun

Some nouns change a lot: rok → roky / let, den → dny / dní, člověk → lidé / lidí (as an object: tři lidi). Sto, stě, tisíc and tisíce are also followed by the genitive plural: dvě stě korun, dva tisíce korun. Age uses the dative: Je mi dvacet let (I'm twenty), but Jsou mi tři roky (I'm three). With 5 or more as the subject, the verb is singular: Ve frontě čeká šest lidí (Six people are waiting in the queue).

Examples

  • Čekali jsme dvacet minut.
  • Je mi třicet let.
  • Na výlet jeli čtyři lidé.
  • Lístek stojí tři sta korun.
  • Máme dva dny volna.
